How Kentucky Plans to Get Out of the Infrastructure Business

CIO Jim Fowler says his state will migrate to the cloud in the next five to seven years.

While some government systems may always need to remain onsite, cloud computing is helping the public sector to get out of the infrastructure business. Jim Fowler, CIO of Kentucky, says his state will undertake a wide-scale migration to the cloud in the next five to seven years, with attendant effects on staffing and contracting relationships. Speaking to Government Technology at the NASCIO mid-year conference in Alexandria, Va., Fowler said the move to the cloud frees up staff to become more innovative while also allowing government to use current technologies.
