Crime Watch via the Internet

The Community Crime Prevention/Safety For Everybody (CCP/SAFE) unit of the Minneapolis Police Department has established "virtual block clubs," or organized crime watch groups on the Internet.

MINNEAPOLIS - The Community Crime Prevention/Safety For Everybody (CCP/SAFE) unit of the Minneapolis Police Department has established "virtual block clubs," or organized crime watch groups on the Internet.

The e-mail crime alert system facilitates better prevention and security practices among residents, business owners and workers in the downtown district.

The CCP/SAFE unit has been providing crime prevention tools to residents, businesses and property owners for years but the previous methods of sending out flyers or faxes or meeting personally with business owners or residents was slow and often hit or miss. Also, there is nothing lost "in translation" with photos transmitted electronically compared to those being faxed or reproduced for flyers.

Now, that most businesses and residents have access to the Internet, the unit has much more flexibility, capacity and much quicker and cheaper communication with citizens. The system also can be, and has been, used for other purposes such as traffic alerts.
