Entrepreneurs Drawn to Kansas City Fiber

Google continues to build out fiber in Kansas City as communities of startups and developers with ideas gather.

The Google Fiber project in Kansas City is taking off. Google is rolling out fiber to more neighborhoods as they meet their preregistration goals and entrepreneurs are gathering to make their ideas reality, The Kansas City Star reported. The village “is almost a fraternity … very much its own support system,” said LocalRuckus co-founder Adam Arredondo.

In Hanover Heights, entrepreneurs and startups are setting up shop, sometimes finding free houses or workspace designed to draw them into the city. The Kansas City Startup Village is such a group, and includes startups like EyeVerify, an eye-scanning security app, and Leap2, which is creating software to speed up mobile web searches.

As previously reported in Government Technology, a website called “HomesForHackers.com” offers entrepreneurs places to live rent-free for three months to work on their ideas and encourages people to move to Kansas City. One such person with an idea, the Kansas City Star reported, traveled from Boston to Kansas City with his laptop and some clothes with hopes of being the next big thing.
