In this image, two boring machines are being assembled in Fife, Wash., in preparation for a project to drill dual tunnels from downtown Seattle to the University of Washington. The tunnels are part of a 3.15 mile, $1.9 billion extension to the Sound Transit light rail system. The machines got underway in late May.
The extension will be opened to the public in September 2016 and Sound Transit officials estimate it will add 70,000 more daily passengers to the system by 2030. The agency has already created more than 2,000 new jobs.
