The Turanor PlanetSolar, which means “power of the sun” in J.R.R. Tolkien mythology, is the world’s largest solar-powered boat. The 102-foot catamaran recently docked in France for the winter after a trip around the world in May 2012. The boat traveled more than 37,282 miles in 584 days, with scientists collecting air and water data along the way. The boat contains 29,124 photovoltaic cells, which power 8.5 tons of lithium-ion batteries.
