Connecticut Commuters Can Now Use Smartphone App to Buy Tickets

On the new app users also can check train schedules and see their train’s service status.

(TNS) — For convenience — and to help shorten lines at the ticket windows — commuters now can download an app that will allow them to buy a train ticket on their smartphones.

As of 4:30 a.m. Monday, the new feature will go live for commuters on the New Haven Line, including the New Canaan, Danbury and Waterbury branch lines.

Versions of the app were developed for Apple and Android devices by Masabi Ltd. They can be downloaded at app stores by searching for the keyword MTA eTix.

This already has been available to riders on the Hudson and Harlem lines, a spokeswoman said.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, in a press conference at Union Station, also announced that ridership on Metro-North’s New Haven Line, the busiest commuter rail line in the country, is up.

He said it surpassed 40.3 million passenger trips in 2015, despite the drop in gas prices, which usually translates into a dip in train riders.

Malloy also said, in responding to demands from the public, a total of 190 bicycle racks have now been installed and are available on its M-8 rail cars.

On the new app, Malloy said users can check train schedules and see their train’s service status.

The state Department of Transportation said it also offers account management tools, allowing customers to get refunds for unused mobile tickets, request duplicate receipts and manage account information.
