Online Tax Accounts Eclipse 1 Million in New York State

More than 1 million online accounts are now registered with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, and business accounts have tripled in the past year, according to an announcement Friday, Oct. 7.

Approximately 519,000 businesses are using the tax departments's online services to file their state taxes online, officials said.

This has saved taxpayers $8.2 million in processing costs, according to the state, and has also reduced errors.

Web-filed withholding tax returns have increased more than 230 percent, and Web-filed corporation tax returns increased more than 75 percent.

"For the sales tax quarter ending September 20, 72 percent of returns were filed online, more than doubling last year's rate of 31 percent," according to a press release. Over the past year:

Users who register at http://www.tax.ny.gov/online can also obtain Certificates of Authority to conduct business, view a summary of their tax account and past tax filings, respond to important notices and correct returns.
