Fourteen new commercial startups have UC Davis to thank this year, as the university brought them forward — matching last year’s number for the most new ventures based on UC Davis technologies in a single year, the university reported Tuesday.

The startups include Venture Catalyst, from within the Technology Management and Corporate Relations division of the UC Davis Office of Research. Venture Catalyst “provides a range of services and resources to help campus inventors and entrepreneurs turn their technologies into companies focused on developing products or services that benefit society,” according to a release from the university.

Other companies include A-Chip, which manufactures a microfluidic-based diagnostic tool that can evaluate inflammatory cell activation and assess a patient’s risk for repeat heart attacks; Biomass Liquefaction Technologies, an innovative new process for energy-efficient liquefaction of biomass; SensIT, working with microelectromechanical-based chemical sensors and information systems; Foodful.ly, an app that integrates with grocery store purchases to alert users when their food about to go bad and provides recipes for it; and VenoSense, which makes a wearable sensor for the management of chronic venous disorders.

According to the press release, in 2015 UC Davis innovators were issued 35 U.S. and 29 foreign patents, executed 98 copyright licenses, processed 233 records of inventions, filed 200 U.S. and 22 foreign patents, and negotiated 51 licenses and 799 material transfer agreements.

Over the past five years, 51 startups, including the 14 new companies for the last fiscal year of 2015-16, were formed at UC Davis; and of the 85 startups that launched in 2015 based on UC research, 13 were from UC Davis.
