Trustee Craig Short made a motion to share the purchase of a Secure View4 Cellphone Data Dumping System from Susteen, Inc. at a cost of $824.06.
“This is a $6,284 piece of equipment that is to be shared with the Glen Carbon Police Department,” Short said. “Our portion of the equipment is 20 percent of the cost. It will be housed at the Glen Carbon Police Department but we will have full access. After the first year we will be pay 50 percent ($997) of the annual licensing renewal.”
The State’s Attorney’s office will pick up one-third of the cost at $2,073.72.
Police Chief Rob Carpenter said the department currently relies on neighboring police departments when an investigation requires that information be obtained from a person’s cellphone.
“These situations are becoming more common and tend to cause a burden on the neighboring department by using their manpower and equipment to assist with our cases,” he said.
Short said the purchase is a good deal for the village.
Data dumping technology allows police departments to access a suspect’s cellphone and retrieve contacts, call history, text messages and other information.
