Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI) is an essential capability of the Smart Grid. This two-way communication network enables meter reading on demand, allowing utility companies to optimize power delivery. AMI provides both utilities and consumers with more control, efficiency and responsiveness. For example, AMI enables smart thermostats, in which consumers can enroll in a program to have their thermostat remotely adjusted, therefore reducing peak demand in exchange for a reduced utility rate.
Automated Meter Reading (AMR) is typically a one-way communication system from the meter back to the utility operations center, which uploads data at preset times of the day or week. AMR can provide lower meter reading costs because it substitutes for labor-based meter reading services, and it's timelier and more accurate.
