U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced a new Web site designed to help veterans work in and do business with the department on Tuesday. The day before, President Barack Obama signed an executive order that emphasized increasing the number of veterans working in the executive branch and assisting recently hired veterans in making the transition to civilian service.

The new Web site, available at www.dhs.gov/veterans, includes information to help veterans find employment opportunities at DHS, ways to get involved with community-based efforts such as Citizen Corps., and information to help severly wounded soldiers recover and return to military service or civilian employment.

Napolitano also recently announced the formation of the DHS Veterans Outreach Steering Committee which includes representatives from across the department who advise the DHS Secretary on ways to reach out to veterans.

"Veterans play a vital role in the Department of Homeland Security's mission to protect the nation, and this Web site will help us build our veteran workforce to more than 50,000 department-wide by 2012," Napolitano said in a news release. DHS currently employs 47,000 veterans.
