(TNS) -- A new phone app launched by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety will make it easier for residents to check the status of their construction plans and report building code violations, officials say.

Launched last month, the app allows users to request inspections, find development service centers and review the status of a permit request. The app is called LADBS Go, and is available as an iPhone or Android application.

Appearing at the department’s downtown headquarters Monday, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti touted the app, saying it “saves you time, it saves you hassle, and hopefully it saves you money.”

The app is one of many released under Garcetti, who took office in 2013 vowing to use technology to streamline government services.

The mayor has also called on city departments to post data online and launched a bare bones website that tracks parking rules around the city so drivers know where they can park.

Not all of Garcetti’s rollouts have seen immediate success. In August, Bureau of Sanitation officials acknowledged serious glitches with a new software system used to track abandoned waste.

The mayor on Monday also unveiled the department’s Expanded Counter Plan Check (ECPC) program, which seeks to cut review times for small building projects from 25 days to three hours. Those projects typically consist of a plan for a new single family home or tenant improvements, officials said.
