Arkansas Counties Complete Runoff Tabulation With Few Problems

June 15, 2006 By

Arkansas counties -- two of which last month had some difficulties with voting machines -- have reported few problems in Tuesday's runoff election tabulations.

The Arkansas Secretary of State's Office reported that 74 counties completed tabulating ballots for the primary runoff election. Secretary of State Charlie Daniels said his office received very few reports of voting or tabulation problems across the state. There were some reports of procedural issues as poll workers opened the polls and other minor problems, but technical support was able to address those concerns, Daniels said.

Counties that did experience notable problems included Stone County, which was unable to employ touchscreen machines because those machines did not properly recognize the electronic ballots, and Saline County, where ballot printing issues delayed scanning until Wednesday morning.

Election Systems and Software -- the vendor providing touch screen and optical scan voting machines -- dispatched a technician to Saline County and categorized the scanning problem as resolvable. Saline County election officials opted to close for the evening and said they would return Wednesday morning to meet with the technician and continue tabulation.
