Californians May Go Hands-Free

In a vote late Wednesday, California Legislators passed a bill which will make using conventional mobile phones while operating a motor vehicle illegal. If signed by Governor Schwarzenegger, drivers will instead have to use a hands-free device while driving.

The bill would go into effect July 1, 2008. If a driver is caught using a cell phone without a hands-free device, the first offense will cost $20 -- $50 for each subsequent offense.

The bill, SB 1613, introduced by Senator Joe Simitain of Palo Alto, will be on its way to the Governor's office where it is yet unclear whether or not he will sign it.
