Feds Launch Consumer Health IT Video Challenge

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services contest is seeking videos of patients and families using health technology to improve their well-being.

Do you know someone who has a great personal story about how their lives have improved through the use of health technology? If so, break out the video camera, because Uncle Sam is offering up some cash prizes for the best ones captured on video.

The National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) announced the Healthy New Year Video Challenge. The contest will be the first in a series of consumer video-based challenges in 2012 as a way to encourage people to integrate health technology as a part of their health care. Winners will split a $5,000 purse.

“In order to empower individuals to be more active partners in their health, they need access to their information and tools they can use,” said Farzad Mostashari, the national coordinator for health information technology, in a statement. “We are excited to harness the creativity of ordinary Americans to help promote the positive impact of the myriad health information technology tools and services on health and health care.”

Videos can be submitted through Feb. 16. Examples of the type of video include innovative ways of emailing a physician, the use of websites to manage health information or receiving medication reminders on your smartphone from a mobile application.

A panel of judges will select the finalists, with a top prize of $2,000 going to the video that wins first place. Second place will receive $1,000 and third place will net the winner $500. Three honorable mention awards worth $250 each will also be given out. In addition, a $750 prize will also be awarded to the video deemed most popular via online vote.

Videos will be judged on the quality and implementation of the idea and the potential impact on health IT adoption.
