Our latest GovTech Innovator is Eric Patten, Esri’s director of global defense and intelligence solutions.
America’s port authorities use the company’s mapping tools to collect data that aids national defense and solves other problems. Departments along the nation’s coasts use Esri’s ArcGIS for several functions, including:
to map bathymetric (underwater and ocean surface) environments the same way ground surfaces are mapped;
to share nautical charts and underwater surface data with other agencies in the cloud; and
to use this geographic data to organize naval and military watercraft for defense and civilian operations.
Patten spoke to Government Technology about how agencies use Esri technology for maritime operations, and how this may change in the future.
