ILJ Offers Online Officer Training

From crime mapping to unbiased interviewing, police officers gain crime-solving techniques via the Internet.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Online courses and live e-meetings are bringing advanced crime-solving techniques to more law enforcement personnel. The Institute for Law and Justice (ILJ) is using a solution from Interwise to conduce live, online training for police departments across the country.

Few police departments have the resources to send personnel to every conference, workshop or seminar, so the ILJ, which is committed to providing training to law enforcement agencies, is now bringing training to them.

The interactive training allows police officers to participate in courses on crime mapping skills, interviewing techniques, and assessing and implementing new technologies. In addition to the training, the ILJ is hosting pre-class meetings to help design in-person courses that will best meet the needs of this busy student population. "We are always looking for more effective ways to communicate with law enforcement agencies," said Randall Guynes, director of information technology for ILJ. "For the time-crunched and budget-conscious - online training is the way to go."

Classes typically include 15 to 30 students and involve constant instructor-attendee dialogue and discussion. Interactive features enable participants to ask questions throughout the class, while instructors provide instant feedback and commentary on technique and style.
