San Francisco is still far in the lead with 5,789 tech companies, but New York City left Boston behind with its 2,194 tech companies compared to 690. Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Mashable, LinkedIn, Google, Yelp, eBay and About.com all have offices in New York City, which also is a hot area for government technology -- startup accelerators and innovative programs sprout up constantly.
And in October, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that the city will pump $12 million into infrastructure for local businesses as a way to spur economic and technological development, so that number may increase into 2013.
