Making a Technology Road Map

Knowing where you're going is important.

WHEATON, Ill. -- The city is in the throes of a comprehensive technology-planning process that city officials hope will improve decision-making for future technology implementations.

"We have set out to identify the next steps of our IT departmental structure as well as how to best invest in hardware and software," said Mike Dzugan, Wheaton's assistant city manager. "We are involving all our departments to develop a big-picture awareness of what we want from our information technology and how to tactically make it happen."

The city is working with a Chicago-based IT consulting firm to compile a list of the city's functional requirements by analyzing the efficiency of the city's applications, looking at new opportunities for automation and assessing various city department's data needs.

The final stage of the project will be the delivery of a five-year "Strategic Software Technology Plan," which will include software recommendations with cost analyses and budgets, procurement guidelines for all IT purchases and implementation plans.

"Wheaton understands the importance of a sound plan to maximize the value of its IT investment dollar and minimize the associated risks," said Christopher Payne, project manager. "The plan will act as a living document to ensure that Wheaton's mix of IT investments best meets the city's mission and business priorities."
