NASCIO Releases State Enterprise Architecture Assessment Report

How far have the states come?

The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) released "The States and Enterprise Architecture: How Far Have We Come?" assessment, funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance.

Since 1999, NASCIO has provided materials and technical assistance in support of the ongoing development of state and territorial enterprise architecture (EA) programs.

Enterprise architecture is not an end in itself, rather it is a management engineering discipline that can guide the path toward transformation and provide the tools for management of change in government.

NASCIO recently conducted a national assessment of the states relative to their enterprise architecture programs.

The intended outcomes from the assessment were to:
  • determine the level of adoption of enterprise architecture
  • determine the depth and breadth of state enterprise architecture programs
  • determine the level of awareness of NASCIO's portfolio of enterprise architecture products
  • assess the effectiveness of these products
  • assess the effectiveness of NASCIO's communication and marketing efforts
  • assess the success and progress of NASCIO's Enterprise Architecture (EA) Program
  • plan future NASCIO initiatives
The report highlights the results of the assessment and provides a series ofb"Calls to Action" to further the state enterprise architecture programs. Thebreport also provides an aggregate view of the maturity level of EA program adoption across the states. The information provided in the report is intended to allow states to compare and contrast their EA program with that of their peers.

NASCIO says it will continue to develop tools, samples, and examples that can be leveraged by its members to seek funding, frame projects, execute on those initiatives intended to deliver government wide information sharing and interoperability. The ultimate outcome is to enable the transformation of government to be more citizen centric and agile.
