NLC Strikes Deal with AOL

Cities can get extra exposure for their Web sites.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The National League of Cities has announced a new partnership with America Online to provide cities with a new way to reach their citizens through the Internet.

The partnership with AOL will give cities the ability to submit their official Web site free-of-charge for listing in the AOL Government Guide -- a one-stop resource to help online users locate government information and connect with elected officials and government agencies at the federal, state and local level.

The Web site is available to anyone on the Internet, and AOL officials said that since its launch in 1999, the site has become the No. 1 government site on the Internet and often ranks among the top 100 sites overall.

The site organizes information, topics and common tasks and personalizes it by ZIP code so that a user can find relevant information quickly.

Cities can use a special Web site to request authorization to provide detailed information on their official city Web site to be included in the Government Guide database. A city's submission will be certified by the NLC, at which time it can then update its information as additional links and new services are provided through its city homepage.

"Through this partnership with AOL, we're giving America's cities and towns a new way to help citizens connect with the level of government that most impacts their daily lives," said Donald Borut, executive director of the NLC. "With the addition of more city information, it will continue to help citizens learn about the wonderful information and services cities has worked hard to deliver on the Internet." - Marc Shapiro, National League of Cities
