New Hampshire Workers Take Advantage of High-Tech Training Scholarships

Laid-off high-tech workers will get scholarships to boost their skills.

CONCORD, N.H. -- Nineteen laid-off high-tech workers will receive scholarships, totaling $90,000, to pursue specialized technology training.

"New Hampshire has one of the highest concentrations of high-tech workers in the nation," said Gov. Jeanne Shaheen. "Our economic success is due in large part to our highly skilled workforce. For our economy to continue to grow and prosper, we need to help our workers adapt to continually changing technology."

Last year, through the Workforce Opportunity Council, New Hampshire received $1.5 million in federal funds to train high-tech workers. With that grant, the Workforce Opportunity Council already has helped 18 high-tech companies train more than 400 employees and provided individual training to another 148 workers.

Gov. Shaheen and the Workforce Opportunity Council also created a special scholarship program for laid-off high-tech workers with $90,000 of those funds.

"This special program is designed to help laid-off high-tech workers get the advanced training they need to re-enter the job market and to keep these talented workers in New Hampshire," Shaheen said.

More than 100 people applied for the scholarships. Qualified applicants were selected by lottery, and recipients come from across the state.

Each of the recipients will receive scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $6,000 to pay for specialized high-technology training.

"These unemployed information technology workers will be able to access specialized courses and bring their new skills back into the New Hampshire workforce rather than moving out-of-state," said Michael Power, president of the Workforce Opportunity Council. "It's vitally important to our high tech, high skilled employers to have these skills available here."
