New York State Thruway Authority and Canal Corporation Centralizes Permitting Activities

New system also allows highway maintenance and engineering division to provide online services to the public.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- the New York State Thruway Authority and Canal Corporation sought a way to automate and manage a collection of permit processes for the agency. The Authority is responsible for issuing or renewing over 7,300 work and occupancy permits per year. The agency has chosen software to streamline permit processes and also give the public an online portal to handle transactions.

The Thruway Authority manages the operations of vital infrastructure such as bridges, as well as road conditions, road maintenance, and tolls. The new system from Accela provides the agency with a centralized database, giving employees the ability to share data and information easily, and have access to the most updated information about specific permits. Regardless of their role in the department, the flexibility of the user interface allows all employees to access the information they need to complete their jobs.

The Authority will also expand its online services to key customers by implementing a transactional access portal. The portal will increase access to the agency's permit management activities by allowing businesses to apply for or renew permits and pay fees directly from the Internet.

The Thruway Authority includes the Canal Corporation, and together they are responsible for 641 miles of roadway and 524 miles of commercial and recreational waterways. The New York State Thruway is headquartered in Albany and has four division offices.
