Newark Airport Tightens Vehicle Security

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will deploy a new technology developed to control and monitor airport vehicles at Newark Liberty Airport.

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will deploy a new technology developed to control and monitor airport vehicles at Newark Liberty Airport.

The system will require anyone operating an airport vehicle to first interface with the new intelligent vehicle hardware, which can incorporate virtually any type of electronic or biometric identification, such as a smart card or fingerprint scanner. A user will only be able to start a vehicle if they are authorized for that particular vehicle, in that particular area of the airport, at that particular time of day. The system also will provide new security features developed under a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The Newark airport system uses I.D. Systems' Wireless Asset Net solution. The technology is designed to improve security and reduce operating costs for the airport.

"It is vital to focus on security for the operations side of the nation's airports as well as the passenger side, and the Wireless Asset Net system incorporates a unique set of tools to secure the large quantity of mobile equipment that services aircraft," said Alan Reiss, the Port Authority's deputy director for aviation.
