North Carolina Gets New CIO

The CIO of the state's Department of Justice will take over as state CIO in May.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Gov. Mike Easley named George Bakolia as CIO of the state's Office of Information Technology Systems. Bakolia will start May 1, replacing Ronald Hawley who has retired to take a job with SEARCH, a nonprofit organization based in Sacramento, Calif., that promotes information sharing between law enforcement agencies.

"With more than 24 years of experience in information systems, George Bakolia is well-qualified to lead North Carolina's technology department," said Easley. "State government technology is of vital importance to the citizens of our state. George will be leading the drive to ensure that North Carolina's information network serves the citizens of this state efficiently and effectively."

Bakolia is currently the CIO of the state's Department of Justice. He directs and supervises all information-systems activities. From September 1990 to November 1999, Bakolia worked at DOJ - first as a Data Processing Manager and then as the Information Systems Assistant Director. From August 1985 to August 1990, he worked at Unisys Corporation, and from February 1979 to July 1985, he worked in various positions at Sperry Corporation.
