Ohio Rolls Out Educational Resource

Every Ohio school, academic and public library will have access to materials.

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Gov. Bob Taft launched the Statewide Core Electronic Information Collection (SCEIC) this week. The SCEIC is a new electronic information resource for students, teachers, researchers and libraries across the state.

The SCEIC is a collaborative effort involving INFOhio, the state's virtual library and information network for primary and secondary school libraries; the Ohio Library and Information Network (OhioLINK), the network for higher education libraries; and the Ohio Public Library and Information Network (OPLIN) under the leadership of the State Library of Ohio.

The networks provided a total of $2.5 million in state funds for the system, which would have cost more than $18 million for libraries and schools across the state to purchase separately.

With the new electronic resource:

- Every K-12 school, public and academic library throughout the state -- regardless of size, location or fiscal resources -- will have equal access to available online materials;

- For the first time, Ohio students will have a consistent set of online resources to use as they move through primary, secondary and higher education; and

-Educators across the state will have access to a broad range of online materials to support curricula.

"This new electronic information resource is yet another improvement in our efforts to support quality education," Taft said. "As a state, we need to make it easy for our students to acquire the technology skills that define the knowledge economy workers of tomorrow. This new resource will help our schools enhance learning to enable our students to succeed."
