Online Property Tax Payment Service Receives Iowa Technology Award

The site processed more than $3 million in taxes last year.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The official Web site for the Iowa State County Treasurers Association has received one of the first Powered by Iowa Technology Awards. The award was presented last month by the Software and Information Technology of Iowa Association (SITI) to honor the site for giving Iowa citizens the ability to pay property taxes over the Internet.

The county property tax service was developed as a joint effort between the Iowa State County Treasurers Association, the State of Iowa Information Technology Department, and Iowa Interactive, a wholly owned subsidiary of NIC, which manages Iowa's official Web site. The online tax payment service was offered in 73 counties when it launched last September. The service is supporting all 99 Iowa counties during the current property tax payment cycle.

Online tax payment processing takes about five minutes. The service is available 24 hours a day and seven days a week during the semiannual Iowa property tax collection period. The online tax service provides the only way for citizens to pay property taxes with a major credit card or electronic check.

The electronic check option allows taxpayers to use checking accounts by entering information from paper checks into the Web site. Payments are processed through Iowa's secure payment server. Last September, nearly 2,700 Iowa taxpayers used the online system to process more than $3 million in tax payments.
