Online Tutoring Available At DC Public Library

"I'm excited about this new technology and the opportunities it will bring to our young people-- and to our adult learners," said Mayor Anthony A. Williams

Mayor Anthony A. Williams, Francis A. Buckley, Jr., interim library director, and George Cigale, Tutor.com's chief executive officer, showed off Live Homework Help, an eReference service that provides free online tutoring available on the DC Public Library's website on Tuesday, February 28 at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G Street, NW.

"My goal since becoming Mayor has been to create a city of life-long learning," said Mayor Williams. "Today, I'm happy that we are gaining ground in achieving this goal. I'm excited about this new technology and the opportunities it will bring to our young people-- and to our adult learners."

During the pilot program of Live Homework Help that began in October 2005, customer comments and response percentages overwhelmingly showed tremendous satisfaction with the online tutoring service from 88% to 100%.

"DC Public Library has been pleased with the tutoring applications that we now have available through Tutor.com's Live Homework Help product," said Francis J. Buckley, Jr., interim library director. "The Library's installation of these unique eReference services will provide a very good start in addressing the District's literacy challenges among teen and adult learner populations."

George Cigale discussed and demonstrated the capabilities of Live Homework Help, which gives District students and adult learners the ability to receive free, one-on-one help in math, science, social studies and English. Sessions are in English and Spanish for Grades 4 - 12 and first-year college. Tutors are available from 2 pm to midnight, 7 days a week.

Cigale also previewed his company's live online chat software, Ask a Librarian, which has been fully customized as DCPL Quick Find to meet the needs of the DC Public Library and its customers. Initially, DCPL Quick Find will operate 3 hours a day; Monday through Friday, 11 am - 2 pm and Saturday, 10 am - 1 pm. This service will provide a live chat component that answers reference questions from the DC Public Library web site via email. Once the hiring of staff and training are completed the service will be offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
