Pennsylvania Launches Pittsburgh Neighborhood Tours Web Site

Promotes the cultural heritage of Pittsburgh's neighborhoods

Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll recently launched a new Web site, funded by the state, to promote the cultural heritage of Pittsburgh's neighborhoods.

The new site, www.pittsburghneighborhoodtours.com, features themed tours that can make it easier for visitors to explore the unique communities that make up the city of Pittsburgh.

Funding for the Web site was provided by the state's Heritage Tourism Development Grant program, which was created by Governor Edward G. Rendell in 2003. Since its inception, the program has invested $1.5 million in nearly every county in the commonwealth. In Pittsburgh, the South Side Local Development Company, which oversees heritage tourism for several neighborhoods, has received $75,000 in the last two fiscal years.

Heritage tourism highlights Pennsylvania's history, cultural offerings and character. The grant money helps communities promote heritage tourism and, in turn, increases visitor spending, creates economic growth, and encourages the preservation of Pennsylvania's heritage assets by making them economically productive.

"When communities understand their heritage, they can celebrate it and harness it to increase tourism, create jobs and create wealth," Lt. Gov. Knoll said.

Among the tours on the Web site are "Pious Pittsburgh," which takes visitors through the city's beautiful churches; "A True Taste of Pittsburgh," which features its amazing neighborhood eateries; and "Sounds of the City," which takes tourists to Pittsburgh's unique music venues.

The site also includes sections where visitors can tell their own Pittsburgh story by writing about their favorite experiences in the city. People can also find postcards to send from neighborhoods.
