RAND Visits Pennsylvania's Office for Information Technology

The research organization is working on a report for California, which is looking at ways to restructure is IT office.

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- CIO Charles Gerhards said his office recently hosted a team of researchers from the RAND organization studying some of the top state government IT organizations in the nation.

The RAND researchers are developing a report for the state of California, which is restructuring its IT office. RAND is an independent research organization that conducts research for clients around the world.

"We are honored that RAND identified Gov. Schweiker's information technology office as one of the most effective in the nation, and we're pleased to be included in their research report," said Gerhards, in a statement. "While RAND may be focusing on the OIT, it's important to note how hard agencies have worked to make the governor's technology programs successful, too."

On Oct. 15 and 16, a team of three RAND researchers conducted one-on-one interviews with Gerhards, project directors of the Office for Information Technology and officials with state agencies who work closely with the OIT on the governor's technology initiatives. Twelve Commonwealth officials were interviewed, and additional interviews may be scheduled during the next month.

Pennsylvania was the first state visited by RAND as part of this research project. The RAND research team plans to conduct interviews in three to five other states known for progressive IT practices. RAND expects to produce its report for California by February 2003.
