South Carolina Signs $85 Million Contract for Advanced Network Services

The new network will enable the State to provide greater network efficiencies and advanced Internet Protocol (IP) services

The State of South Carolina signed a contract to replace its statewide data network with a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) Network. The $85-million dollar contract, which will enable the State to provide greater network efficiencies and advanced Internet Protocol (IP) services, has been awarded to Spirit Telecom.

Spirit Telecom will serve as the primary provider and BellSouth as the subcontractor to deliver the new network. The MPLS technology will provide a more economical and reliable network, while allowing multiple access options from any location within the state.

MPLS technology enables traffic engineering and enhanced performance of IP transport, while simultaneously facilitating quality of service. This IP transport technology allows customers to communicate with enhanced voice, data and video solutions over a common network platform.

Other services that are part of the contract include a customized website for the State. The site serves as an online portal, allowing users of the MPLS network to access an automated system for billing, ordering, provisioning, service level management and trouble reporting.
