South Dakota Project Upgrades Public Computers in Libraries

Discretionary funds help get PCs into libraries.

PIERRE, S.D. -- More than 100 local libraries across South Dakota have new computers for public use, under a new initiative begun by Gov. Bill Janklow this spring.

"South Dakota is the most-wired state in the nation for school technology, and this is another step," Janklow said in a statement. "Not everyone can afford a personal computer. This makes available top-quality, modern computers in our community libraries for the public, whether they're students or senior citizens or everybody in between."

The desktop computers began arriving last week at local libraries across South Dakota. Janklow sent 472 computers to 115 libraries, paying for the $410,000 project from discretionary funds available in the governor's budget.

State officials surveyed libraries earlier this year about their computer needs and capabilities.
