Vermont Announces Internet Portal Deal

The state will work with NIC to redesign the Vermont portal and develop electronic government services.

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- State officials announced a deal with NIC to enhance Vermont's Internet portal and develop the state's electronic government infrastructure.

Vermont approved the contract on June 11 with New England Interactive (NEI), the Augusta, Maine-based NIC subsidiary that also manages official state eGovernment operations for Maine, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

State officials said they committed to an initial contract term of two years, with options to renew for a total of four additional years. The contract will begin with the comprehensive redesign of the state's official Web site, which will be found on the Web at www.Vermont.gov.

Officials said another high priority will be to develop an application that allows Vermont constituents to renew vehicle registrations over the Internet and by telephone.

Both the enhanced portal and the automated vehicle registration renewal service are expected to launch in the late summer or early fall, officials said, adding that as part of its master agreement with Vermont, New England Interactive will also work with other state agencies to develop and host online government services.

The initial projects will also include an enterprise payment engine. Over the next two years, officials said, Vermont will pay New England Interactive approximately $230,000 to redesign and host its portal and more than $200,000 to build and maintain the online vehicle renewal service.

"Designing an easy-to-use state Web site and putting in-demand government services on the Internet are high priorities for us," said Vermont Chief Information Officer Pat Urban. "We look forward to offering convenient online services to Vermont constituents in the near future."

Through its subsidiaries, NIC manages online services that are available to citizens and businesses in 32 states. NIC now builds and hosts official government Web services for seventeen states, including Maine, Rhode Island, Virginia, Indiana, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Kansas, Utah, Arkansas, New Hampshire, Hawaii and Idaho.
