Oakland, Calif., Schools Designing ‘Next Generation Learning Systems’

Oakland Unified School District is increasing bandwidth to provide more customized learning and increase student engagement and overall academic performance.

Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) has selected Comcast Business to help the district innovate and modernize student learning by increasing high-speed Internet access to elementary, middle and high schools, the company announced today.

As part of the initiative, OUSD is increasing bandwidth to provide more customized learning and increase student engagement and overall academic performance.  The district will design and implement the “next-generation learning systems that provide individualized, technology-based learning models to match each student’s specific needs, preferences, and performance,” said the announcement.  The new network infrastructure will enable users to access high-speed broadband from multiple locations using HD video.

Under the new service, average broadband speeds will increase from 50 megabits per second to 1 gbps to the elementary schools and 5 gbps to most of the middle and high schools for the district’s 35,000 students and 5,000 staff.

“It’s imperative that Oakland’s technology infrastructure be state of the art to prepare our students with cutting edge knowledge and expertise necessary to transition into Oakland’s growing workforce,” said Barbara Leslie, president and CEO, Oakland Chamber of Commerce.
