Pittsburgh Universities Tackle Big Data in Health Collaboration

Researchers team up to harness the power of medical data so they can improve health care.

An alliance of Pittsburgh universities and medical centers plans to drill down into untapped reservoirs of health data in a new collaboration.

Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh and its medical center UPMC announced plans this week to work together on health data, reported the Post-Gazette. They will explore ways to detect outbreaks before they happen, figure out how to turn data into useful information, and design products that will move health care forward.

Ultimately, this partnership is designed to personalize and computerize health care in such a way that patients will receive better treatment, and doctors will have more information to draw on as they treat cases. The UPMC plans to offer its partners $10 million to $20 million a year for six years to work on this project, and the three collaborators also have grants in the hundred million dollar range that they'll use to partially fund their activities.
