Indiana Students Win State App Competition

The app, Food For You, helps community members donate directly to families who cannot afford food.

(TNS) — A group of students from Zionsville Community High School has been named a Best in State winner in the fourth annual Verizon Innovative App Challenge for its mobile app concept Food For You. The students on the team are Abi Robinson, Shelby Paden, Jordan Thielbar, Violet Dusek, and Courtney Matkovic.

From now until Jan. 31, anyone can vote to help the Boone County team win the Fan Favorite award, which earns them an additional $15,000 and the chance to work with experts from the MIT Media Lab to turn their concept into a working app. The Fan Favorite award gives one special team an additional distinction and the chance to become a national winner.

Students focused on creating an app to help community members donate directly to families who are impoverished and cannot afford food under the guidance of teacher Robert Brennan. Donors can dedicate funds through the app directly to individual families in need and earn reward tokens in return. Families can use the donations directly to purchase only food. The team was selected from more than 1,200 submissions nationwide and will a $5,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation and tablets for each of the students on the team.

National winners will be announced Feb. 2.
