L.A. Unified School District is giving sixth- through ninth-grade girls a chance to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) solely with other young women in a new academy set to open in August.

The Girls Academic Leadership Academy has enrolled 155 students so far in a single-sex model designed after schools in New York and Texas, reports CBS Los Angeles. Instead of being the only girl or one of a handful of girls in mostly male-dominated classes, girls will be able to learn with each other.

Next year, the district plans to open an academy solely for boys.
