Pittsburgh Groups Donate $25 Million Toward Innovative Education Efforts

The commitments fund science, technology, engineering and math, arts, and maker learning in southwestern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia.

(TNS) -- A cluster of local foundations, nonprofits and businesses has pledged $25 million for innovative education efforts in the Pittsburgh region through May 2017.

Such initiatives have netted about $30 million over the past decade, but “to have $25 million committed over the next year is pretty incredible,” said Sunanna Chand, learning innovation strategist at the Remake Learning Council, which is hosting Remake Learning Days, a weeklong celebration of activities and events exploring innovative teaching and learning in the region.

The commitments, announced Monday at the kickoff event at Google in Bakery Square, fund science, technology, engineering and math, arts and maker learning in southwestern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. The money will go to schools, libraries, museums and other learning organizations throughout the region.

“A lot of these players have been in this space before but are kind of accelerating and increasing their investment in this work,” Ms. Chand said.

The pledges include $10 million in new grants from the Grable Foundation; $3.14 million from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation; $2.9 million from the EQT Foundation; $2.5 million from an anonymous donor; more than $2 million from Chevron Appalachia LLC; and $1.2 million from the Heinz Endowments.

Schools, universities, technology organizations, governments and arts groups, among others, also will dedicate resources and programs.
