Seniors Receive Tech Support from New Hampshire Students

Computer-savvy students share their expertise with seniors struggling with today’s technology.

(TNS) -- LONDONDERRY — Renata Dryer came to the senior center with a list of things she wanted to accomplish

That included learning how to send text messages and download apps on her iPhone.

Luckily, she was joined by Londonderry High student Lizzie Niven, who helped Dryer with her technology troubles.

Dryer was one of about 16 local seniors participating in a technology help program that joined area seniors with Londonderry High students for an afternoon of technology support.

"I wanted to learn to send photos to my daughter who lives in Florida," she said.

The free technical support session gave older citizens a chance to bring in their devices and get help from computer-savvy students.

Students spent time April 26 sharing their expertise on phones, laptops, and other devices and answered any questions seniors had about their own technology interests.

Bonnie Ritvo brought her iPad and iPhone to the center to brush up on her skills.

Ritvo said she uses her iPad to navigate Facebook, music and emails and her phone for other things. She was happy with the turnout.

"There are a lot of kids and a lot of people here this year," Ritvo said.

Ann Carroll of Derry said she was learning all about downloading some apps and what to do when her battery power decides to dwindle.

"It's very helpful," she said.

Mary Vincenti of Londonderry got some valuable tips from the students on how to get more apps on her phone.

She said the students were wonderful to come to the center and help.

Blash said the student/senior connection was part of an overall effort to support the senior center and community.

Students from the high school also help with other projects at the center including a recent St. Patrick's Day luncheon that joined seniors and members of the school's honor society.

Blash also noted another project between high school and senior center where students will be doing an oral history project, interviewing local seniors on their lives and times and then creating videos to capture their thoughts and feelings.

"The interaction between students and seniors is great," Blash said.

Another technology help session is scheduled for May 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the senior center on Mammoth Road.
