Advocate for Disabled Honored in Florida

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist today recognized Carlos Montas of Miami as this week's Point of Light for outstanding volunteerism in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

"Carlos Montas works tirelessly to improve the lives of persons with disabilities," said Crist. "Carlos is a role model to all Floridians because of his selfless desire to serve others."

As an advocate for persons with disabilities, Montas helped draft language for the Accessible Electronic Information Technology bill which was signed into law to improve the accessibility of information to individuals with disabilities. Montas' broad knowledge of the American with Disabilities Act helps him continue to develop and implement initiatives as part of the Governor's Commission on Disabilities.

Montas also has been a mentor for the Hispanic community. While a student Florida State University, he served the Student Government Association as the Deputy Secretary of Disabled Affairs. He also co-founded ACCESS (Association for Creating Community Equality for Seminole Students) and served as the Tallahassee chapter president for the National Federation of the Blind.

"Carlos serves as an example to others in his dedication to public service and his sense of community, which is even more enhanced when one learns of Carlos's disabilities," said Bryan Vaughan, executive director, Governor's Commission on Disabilities.

CSX is a supporting sponsor of the Governor's Points of Light Award. This program recognizes a Florida resident who demonstrates exemplary service to the community. Award recipients are announced weekly. A panel of judges comprised of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service evaluate all nominations and make recommendations to the Governor. The Volunteer Florida Foundation manages the program.
