Gov. Culver Announces Additional Iowa Counties Receive Presidential Disaster Declaration

Jun 30, 2008, News Report

Today, Iowa Governor Chet Culver received word from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that 6 additional Iowa counties -- Dallas, Davis, Iowa, Mitchell, Worth, and Lucas -- were granted a Presidential Disaster Declaration for Individual Assistance.

"This move will ensure that those who have affected by these historic floods will be able to get federal assistance in their recovery efforts. The past few weeks have been a challenging time for our state and for Iowans. But with the strength and resilience of Iowas, I am confident that we can rebuild our state stronger than before, " Governor Culver said.

54 counties across the state have now been approved for Individual Assistance grants. Individual Assistance allows homeowners, renters, business owners and non-profit organizations to recover from the effects of severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that began May 25 and continues.

In addition, 77 counties across the state have been approved for public assistance. Public Assistance funds pay the approved cost of debris removal, emergency services related to the disaster and repairing or replacing damaged public facilities, such as roads, buildings and utilities. A series of applicant briefings will be held for local officials to explain the application process.

Individuals and business owners who sustained losses can apply for assistance by registering online or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired.
