(TNS) - Service organizations offering emergency food and shelter in Daviess County are being asked to apply for money selected for the county from a national board of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and national charities.

Daviess County was given about $38,000 to supplement local service, but organizations must apply quickly. The local board selecting appropriation of the money must receive applications by July 3 to distribute all the funds by the July 10 deadline.

Kathy Oliver, director of community services for United Way of the Ohio Valley and administrator for the local board, said groups should be aware there is money available yearly through the federal system.

"The agencies who receive this money use it to the best of their ability, and it can be helpful," Oliver said.

The local board determining distribution of the money is made up of representation from Owensboro government, United Way, the Cabinet for Families and Children and other established organizations within the community to represent a broad range of views on how Daviess County could best be served. Oliver said a representative of the Jewish community would serving with the board this year.

Charities and groups applying for money must be private voluntary nonprofits or government units, meet requirements to receive federal funds, have an accounting system, be nondiscriminatory, demonstrate delivery of emergency food and shelter programs, have a voluntary board for private nonprofits and certify a registration number.

In the past, federal money from the Emergency Food and Shelter program has been given to groups like The Salvation Army, Boulware Mission and The Pitino Shelter.

Volunteer agencies applying for funds are asked to contact the United Way of Ohio Valley office at 270-684-0668 or to pick up an application at the office at 403 Park Plaza Drive in Owensboro.
