If you want to get attention, hold a contest.  In order to spread the word on the effectiveness of household weather alert radios, the Illinois Emergency Services Management Association (IESMA) and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) are sponsoring the “Weather Alert Radios Save Lives” contest.

Illinois is among the states hit by recent tornadoes and March is Severe Weather Awareness Month in Illinois. The contest, open to all Illinois residents, is part of this campaign. 100 NOAA all-hazards weather alert radios will be given away. Illinoisans can enter here or here.

Participants are invited to read a brief description of the benefits of owning a weather alert radio, and are entered in the contest upon successfully completing a five-question quiz. According to an IESMA news release, winners will be announced in April.

Many communities conduct campaigns to get the public to buy weather radios.  Illinois should be applauded for this creative approach.  Through efforts like this, we’ll come closer to the dream of of weather alert radios being as commonplace smoke detectors.
Let the games begin!
