Irma Now a Category 5 Hurricane--Look out FEMA!

Baptism by wind and water

Brock Long was likely excited to first be considered, then named, and then confirmed as the FEMA administrator. It's highly unlikely that that excitement is still persisting. For now, he is running on adrenalin responding to Hurricane Harvey.

CNN has reported that Hurricane Irma is now a Cat 5 hurricane and is headed this way, which is sure to get everyone's attention. The track has it trending west and then turning northwest headed for the United States mainland. We are about a week out from any North American continent landfall, and the storm could somehow bounce back out into the Atlantic and perhaps miss or only graze the mainland.

This last scenario is the one that Long is praying for. Noting that there are still some evacuations ongoing in Houston, the thought of turning on a dime and heading east to meet Irma somewhere along the coast of the United States would be daunting task.

As a history major I'm reminded of 1066 and William the Conqueror winning the Battle of Hastings. Of course with a winner, there must be a loser--that was King Harold, who died. While most can recount the Battle of Hastings, few remember that Harold defeated another invading army just prior to the Norman invasion.

I wonder if Long knows this history lesson? Defeat one enemy, "Harvey" only to have another invader, Irma, show up in another part of the country and have to rush to confront this new nemesis. Will history repeat itself, or might Irma retreat to the Atlantic Ocean, leaving Brock standing victorious in Texas?
