It has been a long time (30 years), but I was born and raised in Illinois. I lived in River Forest, worked during college in Oak Park, and my next to last, U.S. Army duty station was Fort Sheridan, where I worked extensively with FEMA Region V, which back then was in downtown Chicago.

I like the city and vibe you get there. And, the weather is not as cold as it once was. The weather forecast is always: During the winter: Warmer near the lake and in the summer, cooler near the lake. The "lake" being Lake Michigan.

I still get screwed up sometimes with the water being to the "west" out here in Washington state versus the "east" like it is in Illinois and Wisconsin, another place I've lived. My father-in-law (Milwaukee) would say, "Go east until your hat floats."

In the evenings there were always cars parked down by the lake watching the submarine races.
