Mexico Earthquake(s)

Eventually, it will be our turn — again.

The Mexican earthquake from yesterday, 9/19 is a reminder of how we live on shifting lands. Here in North America and specifically here in the United States, it has been over 20 years since our last big earthquake in California, and many more years, for other areas of the USA susceptible to earthquakes.

Where were you 32 years ago when Mexico City experienced another, much deadlier earthquake, on exactly the same day? I remember it distinctly because I was in the Army and had the duty of escorting an assistant secretary of defense to an evening event in the Chicago area. On the way to pick him up, I heard on the radio about the earthquake and then briefed him on events as we were driving to his scheduled appearance at a dinner engagement.

The other thing I remember from that earthquake is that posters were made up following the earthquake showing how school desks had supported concrete floors that had collapsed, creating a void for anyone who might have dropped, covered and held on in that event.

Flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes, wars and rumors of wars. ...  Now is the time for us to become better prepared, for our turn will come to be put in the crucible of disaster.
