President's Proposed Budget Slashes Funding at USGS

Science versus the wall or defense.

There is a movement in the United States that is anti-science. This is certainly seen in the climate change debate (should not even be a debate!) flood mapping and disaster recovery funding.

Then there is this, How Trump’s 2019 budget would leave us vulnerable to natural disasters. I fully recognize that there is a huge difference between what the president proposes and Congress appropriates. Yet, it is disturbing to me to see that at a time when we need more research and not less on our environment and disasters, that this type of proposal sees the light of day.

There aren't many advocates for the earthquake warning system as it is, so it is not a far-fetched idea that that portion of the budget would get eliminated or scaled back from almost nothing to "just above zero." I've written here in this blog about the need for a warning system. We may have to wait for the next BIG earthquake before anything of significance on that topic gets done.

Just remember this, all those tax cuts you are enjoying have to be paid for, and science looks like a good one to be sacrificed on the altar of more funding for defense, or big business.
