Terrorism and Perceptions

Today it is perceptions over facts.

One of my favorite podcasts to listen to while walking is Hidden Brain. Today I listened to When Is It 'Terrorism'? How The Media Cover Attacks By Muslim Perpetrators.

As humans we look to categorize people into nice tidy groups and then we impose our perceptions on those groups as being all encompassing, allowing for no acknowledgment of the fact that within each group there can be vast differences in belief systems.

Thus all Christians are sometimes labeled as being like the fundamental Christian sects. All Muslims are suspected terrorists. You would think that in this information age we would be better than our American ancestors who put the Irish, Polish, Italians, Chinese, Japanese and Catholics in boxes that categorized them in unfavorable terms.

As we celebrate Independence Day, we can hope for a future when information and facts carry more weight than personal opinions.
