WEA Is Weak When It Comes to Alerting

We have a national warning system that is not being used.

The Wireless Emergency Alerting (WEA) system was designed to use cellular phones as your "in pocket" warning system, no matter where you traveled. In reality, the system has not performed well and the emergency management agencies that should be the prime proponents of the system are not using it as currently configured.

See this open letter to the FCC, Public Safety Groups Seeks WEA Improvements by May 2019. They have an impressive list of co-signers, "The letter was signed by Big City Emergency Managers, the National Emergency Management Association, the International Association of Emergency Managers, the National Emergency Number Association and the U.S. Conference of Mayors." These are the people in the know, and who represent their disciplines.

I totally agree with the letter and supposition that wireless carriers should be able to implement enhanced location identification. It is only a matter of priorities. Life safety should be at the top!
