Yikes — Fake Video Coming Your Way

So much for body camera footage to show what really happened

I'm actually very tired of the word "fake" these days. No one uses the words "honesty" and "integrity" much anymore. It is "fake this and fake that" which dominates the news (which some call fake).

Now to make all of our lives that much more difficult, see this article, The Era of Fake Video Begins. Sticking someone's face on a video of a lewd sex act is one thing, but imagine how this may end up when the technology becomes even more sophisticated. As emergency managers we, like the general population, hunger for video of what is going on during a disaster. Typically we let our eyes be the judge of the authenticity of what we are seeing.

Unfortunately many people are not looking to discern what is real and what isn't. If they view something that fits their "world view," then they will believe it and forward it to others.

I see a day that is rapidly approaching, where we will have a tough time discerning reality from fake, when viewing information and events with our own eyes. Life will be ever more challenging in the months and years ahead.
